The New Mexico Man

The New Mexico Man

Through his leadership in various activities as well as a successful law practice, Fountain was considered a man of clout. In 1888, Fountain was elected to the New Mexico State Legislature, defeating Democrat newcomer Albert B. Fall for the seat, and subsequently appointed Speaker of the House. It was during his tenure in the House that Fountain played a large role in the founding of what is now New Mexico State University. Running for re-election in 1890, Fountain was defeated by Albert B. Fall. (3)
